How to Deep Clean Major Household Appliances

Nicole Eckel • Apr 24, 2023

Keeping your household appliances clean is essential for maintaining their efficiency, increasing their lifespan, and ensuring the safety and well-being of your family. Deep cleaning your major appliances not only improves their performance but also helps prevent unpleasant odors, mold growth, and potential damage. Here are some step-by-step instructions on how to deep clean these essential appliances:

1. Refrigerator:

Start by emptying your refrigerator, placing the contents in a cooler with ice packs. Remove shelves and drawers for individual cleaning. Create a cleaning solution consisting of one part white vinegar and two parts warm water. Wipe down the walls, shelves, and drawers with this solution, focusing on any spills or stains. Clean the seals by scrubbing them gently with a toothbrush dipped in the cleaning solution. Finally, wipe the exterior with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly before placing the shelves and drawers back.

2. Dishwasher:

Managing your dishwasher well will make it more effective at removing stubborn food particles. Begin by examining and cleaning the filter found at the bottom of the dishwasher. Remove any debris buildup in the spray arms, using a toothpick or small brush. Run a dishwasher cleaner or a cup of white vinegar on the top rack through a hot water cycle. For extra cleaning power, sprinkle a cup of baking soda along the bottom of the dishwasher and run a short, hot cycle.

3. Oven:

For a thorough oven clean, start by removing the racks and soaking them in warm, soapy water. Prepare a cleaning paste by mixing equal parts baking soda and water. Apply the paste to the interior of the oven, avoiding the heating elements, and leave it to work for a few hours or overnight. Use a damp cloth to wipe away the paste and any grime that comes off with it. If needed, use a  scraper for tougher stains. Wipe down the oven door and clean the exterior with a cloth soaked in a mild cleaning solution.

4. Stovetop:

Remove the grates and burners and clean them with warm, soapy water, using a soft brush or sponge. For stubborn grease or burnt food, soak them in equal parts of vinegar and water. Clean the stovetop surface with a mild cleaning solution, and use a toothbrush to clean any crevices or hard-to-reach areas. Dry thoroughly before reassembling the grates and burners.

5. Microwave:

Start by placing a microwave-safe bowl containing one cup of water and a tablespoon of white vinegar inside the microwave. Heat it for 5 minutes, allowing the steam to loosen any grime. Wipe down the interior walls, ceiling, and turntable using a damp sponge or cloth. Remove and wash the turntable in warm, soapy water. Clean the exterior with a damp cloth and mild cleaning solution.

6. Washer:

Check and clean the detergent dispensers and any filters. Run an empty wash cycle with a cup of white vinegar and a half cup of baking soda. Use a cloth soaked in a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water to clean the rubber seals and door. Wipe the exterior with a damp cloth and mild cleaning solution.

7. Dryer:

First, remove and clean the lint filter after every use. Periodically, use a vacuum cleaner attachment or a lint brush to clean the vent and hose. To deep clean the drum, wipe it down with a cloth soaked in equal parts water and white vinegar.

Regular cleaning of household appliances will not only keep them appearing clean, it will also help improve their lifespan and efficiency. By following these steps, you can keep your major household appliances well maintained.
