Why Won't My Fridge Cool or Stay Cold.

Fridge Not Cooling

If you have found yourself with a fridge that is not cooling or staying cold, do not jump to the conclusion that you must buy a new refrigerator. Here is a list of 6 reasons that may be why your fridge will not stay cold or cool at all.

1. Set to the Wrong Temperature:

On the internal wall or the top of your refrigerator you can find the temperature control panel. With taking items out and putting items in, it is possible that the panel was hit and was turned down or off. If you control panel is set to the right temperature, read below for more information about what could be wrong with your control panel.

Your thermostat/control panel may have a broken piece that needs to be replaced. To repair this yourself follow the steps below and ensure that your fridge is unplugged and powered off.

  • First, you must remove the temperature control knob to access the thermostat. Remove the knob and then remove the cover, you should now see the shaft of the thermostat.
  • You will find a nut on the thermostat shaft, loosen this and then remove the screw-hole bung. Now the screw should be able to be removed.
  • To make the thermostat visible, remove the assembly from the wall (or top of the fridge). To be able to push out the thermostat, you must remove the bottom and the top cover.
  • Disconnect and remove the wiring from the thermostat, we always recommend to take a picture where the wires belong so you can easily hook them back up when you are finished repairing the thermostat.
  • The next step is to remove the capillary, if the capillary has a sleeve, remove this next.
  • Take your new thermostat and reconnect the wires the way the image you took shows you and begin working backwards to put everything back together.

2. Refrigerator Coils are Dirty:

There are coils on the back of every refrigerator and if you are having issues with the cooling of the fridge, these may need to be cleaned. Gently clean off the coils with a vacuum, the coils can easily be broken so ensure you are very gentle and careful while doing this. This process is easy and shouldn’t take longer than a couple minutes and should be done every 6 months.

This can also help you reduce your energy bill as it needs to use less energy to cool your fridge when the coils are clean.

3. Air Vents May be Blocked:

You may have food or items in your fridge that are blocking your vents which does not allow your fridge to properly circulate the air. Make sure that you never have food items touching the back or walls of your fridge.

4. Door Seal Not Sealing Properly:

This one can be quite self-explanatory and you can look up a simple YouTube video to show you had to replace your door seal. Check your door seal to see if it is damaged, cracked, or split.

5. Incorrect Fridge Placement:

Check to make sure that you have at least an inch of space between your walls and the back of your fridge. If you do not have the proper spacing, your fridge will not function properly.

6. Faulty Compressor:

If the above issues are not the cause to your fridge not cooling properly, it may be that your compressor is faulty or broken. This issue is a bit more complicated and we recommend calling in an appliance repair technician to diagnose and repair this.
