How to Wash Blankets Covered in Pet Hair.

Having a cat or dog as a companion can be one of life's greatest pleasures, especially if you don't have children. They are loyal and have unconditional love, which makes them so special! Having any pets will leave your home covered in animal hair. Pet hair clings onto blankets, in this article, we will discuss how to wash these blankets covered in pet hair properly to protect the health of your washer.

Will Washing Blankets Covered in Pet Hair Clog My Washing Machine

The question we often hear when we are servicing a washer repair is will my pet's hair clog my washing machine and lead to it needing a repair? The short answer is no, but over time it can cause your washer to work harder and ultimately lead to a malfunction.

Removing animal hair from blankets, clothes, and rugs can be difficult and it may be impossible to remove it when water is added to the mix. This is why it is important to know how to properly wash blankets to remove pet hair.

Cleaning Drain Filter in Washing Machine

What are the Effects of Pet Hair in my Washing Machine?

Many pet owners wonder what will happen to their pet's hair when they wash clothes and blankets. It looks like the hair just "disappears", but this doesn't make sense because our machines aren't magical. Wondering where all that hair goes?

All this hair gets into the drain pump of your washing machine. This is the part of the washing machine that drains all the water from the tub after a cycle completes or drains. This pump has a built-in filter that helps eliminate any debris that can clog and block the piping. It also makes sure that the pump itself does not clog. If you have had the washing machine for some time, we recommend that you clean the drain immediately, as this may require a repair soon.

Prevention is the Best Solution

The best prevention is to remove as much pet hair as you can before washing the blanket. This will ensure that you do not have to constantly clean the filter in your drain to prevent your pump from overworking.

We recommend using a lint roller on your blankets and clothes before placing them in the washing machine. If you do not have a lint roller handy, use a piece of tape to remove any hair visible on the fabric. You can also use a balloon's static to remove hair from blankets, this option is less used.

The best way is to use a dryer. Your dryer has a lint filter and this area can be used to collect pet hair. Just run the dryer for 10 minutes with dry clothes and watch as it pulls out the hair. When finished, remove the filter and clean the hair from it. To help with this, add a dryer sheet to help remove more hair during the 10-minute cycle.

Prevention is the best way to ensure you will not need to call in a repair technician to fix the damage caused by your pet's hair.
